The hour of steaming tea and banished books… — Paul Verlaine, from “[The rosy hearth],” trans. Gertrude Hall (via proustitute)
Somehow I’d forgotten that Sendak illustrated Little Bear, which might have been my first favorite book (and also, I think, the first book to make me cry? Or want to cry? I want to cry just thinking about it). It eventually became an atrocious animated series on Nick, Jr., so if you’ve only ever witnessed that, find a copy of Else Homelund Minarik’s original and weep at your desk with me today. (Minarik’s still hanging in there! 92! Bless you, woman!)
Had no idea Sendak drew this book, which was also my first favorite book, according to my parents. I probably haven’t read it in over 25 years, and am now kind of afraid to.
!!! My copy of Little Bear was covered in fur and slipped into a sleeve so that you could rub their bear tummies. I remember the first time I realized that the drawings in Little Bear were the same as the drawings in Chicken Soup with Rice and I couldn’t believe that one person could create so many special things. It was a truly illuminating moment.
